Why a Monastery for Mondobiotech?
As Gregor Johann Mendel chose to live and work in the Augustinian abbey of Saint Thomas in Brno, where he discovered the fundamental principals of genetics, which are the base of the study for decoding of the human genome, so has Mondobiotech decided to base themselves in the monastery in Stans: a perfect place to create an international centre for the research of rare diseases, immersed in a spiritual and mystical atmosphere.
On the 16th April 2008 the official entry to the monastery in Stans was celebrated. For the occasion, a round table discussion, moderated by Bruno Giussani, was held with the theme: “Why is Mondobiotech entering a monastery?”. To the round table discussion the following people participated: Fabio Cavalli (CEO of Mondobiotech), Dorian Bevec (Chief Scientific Officer), Gerhard Odermatt, representative of the canton of Nidwalden, Brother Paulus Terwitte, head of Franciscan capuchin monks, Brother Ephrem Bucher, regional Minister of the Capuchin Monks and some international professors such as Sami I. Said (Stony Brook New York), Luca Richeldi (University of Modena e Reggio Emilia), Ron du Bois (National Jewish Health), Mary Dunkle (Vice President of National Organization for rare Disorders) and Robert Huber (Nobel Prize Laureate).
